OpenAI Ads Integration activation guide

  • Within your OpenAI Ads account, go to Tools > Conversions
  • Click on the ‘+ Create’ button and select ‘Data Source’
  • After the creation, OpenAI will provide you with a Pixel ID
  • It is recommended to add the OpenAI pixel on your website / relevant pages since it could improve attribution accuracy (see in depth explanation below)
  • Within the OpenAI Ads Manager, go to Tools > Conversions > Conversion Events
  • Click on the ‘+ Create’ button and select ‘Conversion Event’
  • Select the relevant pixel that you have added
  • Select ‘Order created’ as Base event
(If you use a different Base event definition, please make sure to adjust it accordingly in the event settings of the OpenAI Ads platform in the wecantrack interface)
  • Give the conversion a name, e.g. ‘Affiliate Conversion’
  • Click on ‘Create’
  • Click on the Conversion tab
  • Then click on ‘+ Create conversion key’
  • Give the Conversion key a name, e.g. ‘wecantrack’
  • Click on ‘Create’
  • Copy the Conversion key
  • Within the wecantrack interface, place this Conversion API Key in the OpenAI section of your website settings or in the OpenAI Ads platform settings of the relevant website
  • In case you set a different Base event than ‘Order created’ within OpenAI Ads, please make sure to adjust the Event Type accordingly in the wecantrack Event Settings
  • Go to Features and enable the OpenAI Ads Integration feature

That’s it, from now on conversions coming from ChatGPT Ads campaigns will be integrated in your OpenAI Ads Manager account using their conversion API. The conversions will be available in their ad manager within 48 hours.

How to track ChatGPT Ads campaigns in wecantrack & GA?

To monitor your ChatGPT Ads campaigns on both the wecantrack dashboard and Google Analytics, it is necessary to include UTM parameters in the destination links that you use for your ChatGPT ads. You can add your preferred UTM parameters to the ‘Landing page query parameters’ on campaign, ad group or ad level.

Since OpenAI Ads also provides URL variables you can set up the landing page query parameters similar to this example:

					utm_source=chatgpt&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign={campaign_id}&utm_content={campaign_id}-{ad_group_id}-{ad_id}

Should I add the OpenAI Pixel on the site?

The OpenAI Pixel is optional, but it can improve measurement when the oppref click ID is no longer available.

The Pixel stores OpenAI identifiers such as oppref and obref in a first-party cookie. For example, if someone clicks an OpenAI ad, returns to your site a few days later through Google or directly, and then converts, the Pixel can help associate that conversion with the original OpenAI Ads interaction.

OpenAI also recommends using the Pixel together with the Conversions API for more resilient measurement.

If you only want to send conversions associated with an OpenAI Ads click (oppref), you can choose not to install the Pixel.

If the Pixel is installed, almost all conversion events will contain an obref, including conversions from visitors who did not come from an OpenAI Ads campaign. These conversions are not necessarily attributed to an OpenAI Ads campaign.

UTM Link Builder

You can also use this UTM link builder to generate your own UTM link. Simply fill in the fields and click on ‘Add UTM Parameters’.
